I’m back at the depot for the annual employee pancake-tossing race.
Luckily, storm Imogen had abated leaving a bright sunny day in her wake and to make things even better, some days back the Postmouster General had announced the winner be awarded two extra days holiday and a packet of custard creams.
Knowing what mice are like when it comes to the promise of free biscuits, Millie, who was expecting a fiercely competitive event, was on standby to pick up any casualties with her Mouse Search And Rescue plane.
First down was Clive who took a rather nasty tumble into the bushes after being temporarily blinded by a pancake in the face. Things looked pretty serious at first, but a quick pat on the forehead with Millie’s official FIFA regulation damp sponge seemed to get him back on his feet in no time at all.
Oscar who had, on finding himself top of the depot sweepstake, been showing off all day, ‘lunched it’ just before the finish line due to tripping over a pile of rabbit droppings. This unfortunate (but not undeserved) accident opened the field up for rank outsider Gertrude, who romped home in first place, albeit passing through the finishing post from the wrong direction after circling several times in a state of abject pancake orientated confusion.
I didn’t take part in the race as Millie had asked me if I could undertake the responsibility of officially adjudicator and signaller for the start of the race. Despite Millie running me through flag protocol a few days before, in all the excitement I totally forgot which flag was for which purpose, and resorted to waving both frantically as everyone crossed the finish line.
On the way back to the canteen, Oscar, being something of a poor looser, complained constantly about the rubbish state of the course, but nobody took much notice, as most mice were busy chatting about which toppings they were going to choose at our celebratory pancake supper!
Hope you had a good pancake day!
How was your pancake day? Which toppings do you prefer on your pancakes? Morris would love to hear from you, so please feel free to hit the comments box.
Morris will get back to you mouse style.
